Bruno MANTOVANI: Jazz Connotation
—————————————————————————————————————-
DESCRIPTION:

Taking the notion of “affinities” with its vast resonances, I have constructed this evening’s program not only on works by composers with whom I feel
a particular bond, but also on the diverse relationships of the chosen composers with their sonic material.
In 2010, for Mahler’s 150th Birthday (not to mention 2011, the centennial of his death), I felt compelled to create a vast sound sculpture that would
incorporate moments from all of his 10 symphonies: not in chronological order, already a nod to Mahler’s genius in controlling sprawling labyrinths capable
of syncretizing the seemingly irreconcilable cultivated and vernacular musics.
The other 5 composers I have had the privilege of knowing well and, in the cases of Donatoni, Ohana, and Mantovani, having works written for me by them.
Donatoni shows how affinities can be volatile, with no definitive answer. Berio brilliantly manipulates free time vs. measured time. Crumb, the Modern American Transcendentalist,
demonstrates the unity in diversity, with clear allusions to his affinities. Ohana’s free counterpoints live their independent lives and amalgamate as they will, and
Mantovani, like Mahler, fuses the most exigent concert music with its polar opposite…which enables us to come full circle.–JG
